Fishing at Imatra
Fishing experiences all year-round.
Imatra offers fantastic experiences to fishers all year long. The fishing waters of Greater Saimaa are just a stone's throw away, and flowing right through the city centre is Vuoksi, Finland's swiftest river – an experience for fly fishers, trollers, and autumn night spearfishermen alike, as well as for the youngest fishers in the family. The area's clean, fish-rich waters, diverse in species, are unique even by Finnish standards.
Fishing tourism in Imatra has long traditions. The first tales of the Vuoksi river's abundant and large salmons date back to the early 1830s.
Swift salmon river, plentifull catches.
Vuoksi is an inspiring fishing spot, as the river holds many large fish and plenty of salmonids – which you are also allowed to catch. More trout are caught per hour here than in any other comparable destination in our country.
Vuoksi is an excellent fishing destination during the winter months too. The flowing river stays open for angling even in winter, while also allowing ice fishing (pilkkiminen) in calmer spots and at Mellonlahti bay, which is an outstanding spot for rainbow trout. The fish stocks are partly stocked and partly natural, and their vitality is carefully managed, taking fishing ethics into account.
