The best nature spots in Imatra

Antti Kymäläinen, Imatra's ambassador shares his favourites!

1.Nature trails for every taste

The 3.7 km trail on Lammassaari island leads you through the scenic ridges of Saimaa. The island’s hut, lean-to shelter, and multiple campfire sites make it perfect for families or evening adventures. The Lammassaari trail network connects with Ukonrauha’s trails, sports facilities, and the beach.

Close to the city center, a popular route runs along the shores of the Vuoksi River. It’s ideal for joggers and cyclists, offering a rich mix of countryside, cityscapes, and forest - all in one. The route is crowned by scenic river views, bridges, and flowing water.

2.Kayaking on the Vuoksi River

A kayak is an excellent way to explore Vuoksi. It flows naturally with the current and can be launched from several locations with ease.

Fishing on the Vuoksi is best started at the Vuoksi Fishing Park, where you can buy a permit, rent a boat, or book a local guide.

Besides Vuoksi, the southern Saimaa area, from the Lyly Islands to the mouth of the river - is excellent for fishing, as is the clear Immalanjärvi lake. Immalanjärvi, with its large open waters and depth, offers both challenge and reward. Boats can be launched from the Rautionkylä side.

3.Campfire gems

During a hike, a good rest spot is worth its weight in gold. The new campfire site at Mellonlahti is arguably the most beautiful along the Vuoksi. Another popular, though unofficial, fire pit lies downstream at the end of Tillolantie, easily accessible by car.

The fire pits at Mutterinranta in Tainionkoski and below Neitsytniemi Manor are also praised. The Neitsytniemi site even features an accessible dock for fishing, making it a destination for everyone.

4. A night in nature – in a hammock on an island

For those seeking a more exotic outdoor experience, the islands of the Vuoksi offer a unique opportunity. Even for locals, spending a night on the river is something special. Swaying in a hammock by your home river reveals its hidden charms. While reaching the islands requires a boat, a night spent outdoors is always worth the effort.
